Which is better for economics: Santa Clara University or the University of Copenhagen?

I’m trying to decide between Santa Clara University and the University of Copenhagen for economics. I want a program that will give me a strong foundation and be useful for future internships or grad school.

I’m still figuring out what kind of environment I’d do best in, so I’m mostly trying to compare the overall strength of the economics program and how each school is viewed for this major.

The biggest practical tradeoff is proximity to U.S. business recruiting versus the broader international and research-oriented profile of a major European university. Santa Clara gives you direct access to Silicon Valley employers, a smaller private-school setting, and easier networking for internships during the school year. The University of Copenhagen offers the scale, academic reputation, and quantitative depth of a large public research university that is very well regarded across Europe.

For economics specifically, Copenhagen is usually seen as the stronger academic name. Its economics training tends to be more theoretical and quantitative, and the university has a stronger research presence overall. That can matter for grad school, especially if you may want a master’s or PhD path and are comfortable in a more independent, less hand-held academic environment.

Santa Clara’s advantage is practicality and access. Its Leavey School of Business ecosystem, Bay Area location, and alumni network can make internships more straightforward, especially if you want roles connected to finance, consulting, tech, or business analytics in the U.S. Even though economics is not the same as business, being on a campus with strong employer ties can matter a lot when you are looking for experience early.

How each school is viewed depends heavily on where you want to work. In the U.S., especially in California, Santa Clara is more immediately legible to employers and can be very useful for internship recruiting. In Europe and in more internationally academic contexts, the University of Copenhagen likely carries more weight as a university brand in economics.

If your priority is the strongest economics department in pure academic terms, I would lean University of Copenhagen. If your priority is turning the major into U.S.-based internships and a smoother path into American employers, Santa Clara is the more strategically useful option.
