Is Santa Clara University or the University of Iowa better for accounting?

I’m trying to compare these two schools for accounting and decide which one would be the better choice for me. I know both are solid options, but I’m mainly interested in which has the stronger accounting program and better outcomes for students who want to go into accounting after college.

I’m a high school senior looking at fit, academics, and career value, so I want to understand which school is generally considered better for accounting.

The biggest practical tradeoff is location and recruiting network versus a more established, lower-cost public business pipeline. Santa Clara gives you direct access to Silicon Valley employers and a strong Bay Area alumni base, while the University of Iowa has a long-running Big Ten business school with a very recognizable accounting track and broad Midwest recruiting. For accounting specifically, both can work well, but they lead into somewhat different job markets and price points.

Academically, Iowa often gets the edge for accounting as a pure major. The Tippie College of Business has a strong reputation in accounting, a clear path into public accounting, and solid recruiting from major firms. Santa Clara’s Leavey School of Business is well regarded too, but its business reputation is often discussed more broadly through finance, entrepreneurship, and its proximity to tech companies rather than accounting alone.

For outcomes, Santa Clara can be especially attractive if you want to build a career in the Bay Area, including audit, tax, or advisory work tied to tech and startup-heavy industries. Being near San Jose and San Francisco matters for internships during the school year, and that can be a real advantage. Iowa tends to offer very dependable placement into accounting roles as well, especially with firms that recruit heavily in the Midwest, and it may offer stronger value if your cost there is meaningfully lower.

On fit, Santa Clara is a smaller private Jesuit university with more of a contained campus experience and closer faculty access. Iowa is a much larger public university with a bigger campus, bigger school spirit, and more scale in student life. That difference can shape your day-to-day experience as much as the accounting department itself.

If the question is strictly which school is more widely seen as stronger for accounting, I would lean University of Iowa. If your goal is accounting in California, especially the Bay Area, and the cost is manageable, Santa Clara becomes much more compelling because its location can outweigh a small academic edge on paper.
