Is University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign or University College London more prestigious for engineering?

I’m a high school senior trying to compare engineering options and keep seeing UIUC and UCL come up a lot. Both seem really strong, but I’m not sure how they’re viewed in terms of prestige, especially for engineering.

I’m mainly trying to understand how the two names compare in reputation among employers and within the engineering field.

For engineering specifically, UIUC usually carries the stronger reputation, especially in the U.S. engineering world and among technical employers who know department-level strength. UIUC is particularly well known for fields like computer engineering, electrical engineering, civil engineering, and materials, and its engineering identity is one of the school’s clearest strengths. UCL has major global name recognition and is highly respected, but its prestige is often broader and more tied to being a leading London research university than to having the same engineering-specific reputation as UIUC.

If you want the school whose name tends to signal “serious engineering powerhouse” to American employers, graduate programs, and engineering faculty, UIUC has an edge. Its College of Engineering has a very established reputation, deep industry recruiting, and a large alumni presence in U.S. tech and engineering sectors. In engineering circles, that kind of departmental reputation often matters more than overall university brand.

UCL makes more sense for a student who cares about international prestige, especially outside the U.S., or who values the visibility that comes with a major London institution. Many people worldwide will instantly recognize UCL as a top university, and that can matter in multinational settings.

Employer perception also depends on where you want to work. In the U.S., UIUC is likely to have more direct recruiting pull for engineering roles. In the UK and in some international contexts, UCL’s name may travel more easily with non-engineers and across industries.
