Is Tulane University or University of Illinois Chicago better value for an undergraduate degree?

University of Illinois Chicago is the better value for most undergraduate students. UIC’s sticker price is usually far lower, especially for Illinois residents, and Tulane is a private university with a much higher total cost even after merit awards in many cases. From a pure return-on-investment angle, it is hard for Tulane’s price to beat a large public research university unless Tulane gives you unusually strong aid.

The biggest differentiator is cost structure. UIC starts from a public-university price point, while Tulane starts from a private-university price point that includes much higher tuition and living costs in New Orleans.

The next factor is financial aid predictability. Tulane is known for offering merit scholarships, but many students still face a substantial net cost because the starting price is so high. UIC may be less flashy in merit packaging, yet for many families, especially those who qualify for need-based aid or in-state rates, the final number is simply easier to justify.

A third difference is how much brand premium you are paying for. Tulane has a strong national reputation, a distinctive campus experience, and especially good visibility in areas like public health, business, and pre-med pathways. But for many majors, UIC delivers solid academics, research access, and an urban professional network in Chicago without requiring you to pay that premium, which often makes the degree feel more worth the price long term.

The main exception is if Tulane gives you a very large merit or need-based package that brings its net cost close to UIC. At similar net prices, Tulane’s smaller private-school environment and alumni network can make it more compelling.
