Pepperdine or Fordham: which is better for city life and an urban college experience?

Fordham offers a much stronger city experience overall. Its New York City locations, especially the Lincoln Center campus in Manhattan, place students directly in an urban environment with public transit, internships, restaurants, and events woven into daily life. Even Fordham’s Rose Hill campus in the Bronx is still part of the city and connected to the rest of NYC by train and subway.

Pepperdine feels very different. Its main campus is in Malibu, which is beautiful and coastal but not urban in the way most students mean when they want city life. Los Angeles is nearby, but Pepperdine is not embedded in it, and getting into the city usually takes planning and a car or shuttle rather than just stepping off campus into a dense city setting.

Fordham also gives you a more day-to-day urban rhythm. Students can regularly use the city for class-adjacent opportunities, part-time jobs, cultural events, and social life without treating it like a separate destination. That matters because an urban college experience is usually less about being near a city on paper and more about whether the city is part of ordinary student life.

Another practical difference is how each campus feels once you are actually there. Pepperdine has a more self-contained residential campus with scenic views and a quieter atmosphere. Fordham, especially Lincoln Center, feels integrated into the movement and pace of New York, which is much closer to the connected city experience you described.
