Is Pepperdine or Santa Clara better for city life?

The biggest practical tradeoff is that Santa Clara is embedded in a real city corridor you can use day to day, while Pepperdine has the scenery and Los Angeles name but a more isolated campus experience. Santa Clara sits in Silicon Valley next to San Jose, with walkable nearby businesses, Caltrain access, and easier links to downtown areas. Pepperdine is in Malibu, which is beautiful and close to parts of LA, but students are not living in a dense urban neighborhood and usually need a car or school transportation to get around easily.

For actual everyday city life, Santa Clara feels more connected. The campus is in a developed area with restaurants, shops, and city infrastructure around it, and San Jose is immediately nearby. You are also in a region with frequent events, internships, public transit options, and a busier surrounding environment that can feel active even outside campus.

Pepperdine gives you access to LA in the broad sense, but not in the way most students imagine when they hear “city.” Malibu is coastal, spread out, and quieter, so daily life can feel more residential and self-contained. Going into Santa Monica, West LA, or other parts of Los Angeles is possible, but traffic and distance make that more of a planned outing than a casual part of your routine.

If your question is specifically about which school offers more real, consistent city life during the school week, Santa Clara is the clearer answer. Pepperdine can be appealing if you want proximity to LA plus a scenic, removed campus, but Santa Clara is the one that will feel more plugged into an urban area as a student.
