Pepperdine vs UC San Diego for computer science: which is better for undergrad CS?

UC San Diego is the stronger undergraduate choice for computer science. Its CS program has much deeper course offerings, a larger research ecosystem, and much stronger proximity to major tech employers in San Diego and Southern California. For pure academic and career value in CS, UCSD has a clear edge over Pepperdine.

One big differentiator is program depth. UCSD’s computer science department is a major, established program with broad upper-division options in areas like systems, AI, machine learning, security, theory, and graphics, plus far more faculty doing active CS research. That matters because stronger departments usually give undergrads more chances to find a niche, join labs, and take advanced electives before graduating.

Another difference is recruiting and internship access. UCSD benefits from being a known target for tech recruiting, and its location near a large biotech, defense, software, and startup presence helps with internships during the school year as well as in summers. Pepperdine can still lead to good outcomes, but it is not as closely associated with computer science hiring pipelines, and its network is not centered around CS in the same way.

The peer environment also matters. Pepperdine’s advantages are more about scale and campus experience than CS strength. Smaller classes and more individual attention can be appealing, but if your main question is which school gives you the more powerful undergrad CS platform, UC San Diego is the answer.
