Is the University of Georgia or Duke harder to get into?

The biggest practical difference is that Duke is an extremely selective private university with a national applicant pool, while the University of Georgia, even though it is selective, especially for out-of-state students, admits at a noticeably less restrictive level overall. In plain terms, Duke is harder to get into. That is true for most applicants, including many very strong students with top grades and scores.

Part of the gap comes from who applies and how each school reads applications. Duke draws a very concentrated pool of applicants who often have near-perfect academics, high-level extracurriculars, and strong national or international competition. UGA also attracts many excellent students, but as a large public flagship, its admissions process operates on a different scale and with a broader range of applicants.

Residency matters a lot more at UGA. Georgia residents usually have a clearer admissions path than out-of-state applicants, especially if their academic profile is strong. Duke does not have an in-state advantage, so everyone is competing in essentially the same pool, which keeps the bar very high across the board.
