Which is better for economics: University of Georgia or UCLA?

I’m trying to compare these two schools for economics because both are on my list, but they seem pretty different overall. I know fit depends on a lot of things, so I’m mostly trying to understand which one has the stronger economics program and reputation for the major.

I’m a current high school student trying to narrow down my college list and want to make a more informed choice.

For economics specifically, UCLA usually carries the stronger national and international reputation. For a student who wants a broadly recognized economics degree, more upper-level course variety, and easier access to a major job market like Los Angeles, UCLA has the edge.

UCLA tends to fit students who want a more theory-heavy, quantitative economics environment and who may be interested in research, policy, consulting, finance, or eventually graduate school. You would also be in a place with strong internship access during the school year, which matters in economics because experience in data analysis, business, policy, or market research can shape outcomes as much as the major itself. The tradeoff is that UCLA is a very large public university, so you should expect some big classes and a more self-directed academic experience.

UGA makes more sense for a student who wants a solid economics program in a somewhat more manageable setting and may value campus community, school spirit, and a classic college-town environment. Economics at Georgia is well respected, especially in the region, and students can do very well from there, particularly if they are proactive about faculty relationships, internships, and adding complementary skills like statistics, finance, or data work. It is not viewed at the same overall level of prestige in economics as UCLA, but it can still be an excellent choice depending on cost and fit.

If your question is strictly which school has the stronger economics reputation, UCLA is the clearer answer. If cost, campus culture, or in-state value makes UGA much more attractive, that can absolutely outweigh a reputation gap for many students.
