Carnegie Mellon is the clearer pick for computer science if cost is manageable, because its CS program is one of the most rigorous and best connected in the country, the curriculum goes deep early, and employers actively recruit there for software, systems, AI, robotics, and research-heavy roles. Michigan State can still lead to strong outcomes, but it does not offer the same concentration of advanced CS resources, peer intensity, or industry pull in the field.

The biggest difference is the curriculum itself. At CMU, computer science is a centerpiece of the university, so course offerings are unusually broad and specialized, with strong depth in areas like machine learning, theory, systems, human-computer interaction, and robotics. The pace is demanding, and the student culture tends to push technical growth fast. At Michigan State, the CS education is more conventional and can absolutely prepare you well, but it is less known for that same level of intensity and specialization.
