Should I choose Michigan State or UCLA for prestige?

The biggest practical tradeoff is national brand recognition versus cost and fit: UCLA carries a noticeably stronger overall academic reputation in most parts of the country, while Michigan State is still a well-known Big Ten university with strong outcomes in several fields and can make more financial or personal sense for some students. For internships, grad school, and first jobs, the school name helps most at the margins, especially for competitive industries, but your grades, experiences, recommendations, and how well you use campus opportunities usually matter more. Between these two specifically, UCLA’s name will open a few more doors on first impression, particularly outside the Midwest and in fields where employers screen quickly by school familiarity.

That said, Michigan State is not a low-prestige option. It has a large alumni network, solid research activity, and respected programs in areas like business, education, communication, supply chain, and some STEM fields. In the Midwest especially, employers know it well, and for many careers a strong student at Michigan State will do better than an average student at UCLA.

For grad school, prestige matters less than many students think. Admissions committees care much more about GPA, research, writing, recommendations, and course rigor than a simple school-name comparison. A UCLA label may add a small edge in perception, but it will not outweigh stronger academic performance and faculty relationships at Michigan State.

For first jobs and internships, the difference is real but not absolute. UCLA tends to have broader national and international visibility and location advantages tied to Los Angeles industries. Michigan State can still get you to the same destinations, but you may need to be a bit more proactive with networking and positioning depending on the field.

If your question is strictly prestige, UCLA has the clear advantage. If choosing UCLA would mean much more debt or a worse academic and personal fit, that advantage may not be worth nearly as much as people make it sound.
