Is Pitt worth it compared with Boston University for an undergraduate degree?

The biggest practical tradeoff is cost versus location-and-brand premium. Pitt is often the smarter pick when the price difference is large, because it is a respected research university with strong undergraduate opportunities, especially in health-related fields, engineering, business, and sciences. BU does offer the advantages of Boston, dense internship access during the school year, and somewhat stronger national name recognition in some circles, but that edge is usually not big enough to justify a much higher cost for most students.

For undergraduate experience, these schools feel different. Pitt has a more traditional campus setup in an urban neighborhood, a strong school spirit culture, and research access at a large university. BU is also urban, but it feels more integrated into the city and less like a classic campus, which some students love and others find less cohesive.

For future opportunities, Pitt is not a fallback brand. Employers, grad schools, and medical schools know Pitt well, and the university has real academic depth plus connections through UPMC and its broader research ecosystem. BU may carry a little more immediate recognition outside the Northeast or internationally, but outcomes depend much more on your grades, internships, research, and networking than on this specific name difference.

I would take BU over Pitt only if the extra cost is manageable without major financial strain and you have a clear reason to use what BU specifically offers, such as Boston-based internships, a particular program, or a strong preference for that environment. If Pitt is a lot cheaper, then Pitt is absolutely worth choosing over BU for undergrad, and for many students it is the more sensible decision.
