University of Rochester tends to have the more active on-campus social life, while American University’s social scene is more shaped by Washington, DC and what students do off campus. Rochester is more residential, students spend more of their time on or near campus, and that usually makes it easier to feel like there is a shared campus rhythm. American has plenty happening, but the energy is often more dispersed because internships, city events, and friend groups in DC pull students outward.
