Is Florida State or the University of Washington worth the cost for undergraduates?

The biggest practical tradeoff is this: Florida State often offers a much easier price tag to justify, while the University of Washington can be worth paying more for only if you are specifically aiming at areas where UW has unusual academic and recruiting strength. For many undergraduates, the difference in long-term outcome is not large enough to automatically justify a major cost jump. That matters because both are well-known public universities with strong campus life, broad majors, and solid alumni networks, but UW’s premium tends to make the most sense when there is a clear academic or career reason behind it.

UW has real advantages. It benefits from its Seattle location, stronger visibility in tech-related fields, and closer access to internships and employers in industries like software, engineering, biotech, and health. In some majors, especially computer science, engineering, informatics, public health, and certain research-heavy paths, people often see UW as having more upside if you can actually access the program you want.

That last part is important. At UW, some of the most sought-after majors are competitive to enter, and being admitted to the university does not always guarantee a straightforward path into your preferred department. Florida State is usually viewed as the more predictable value play: lower cost for many students, a classic undergraduate experience, and good outcomes across a wide range of fields, especially if you are proactive about internships, honors opportunities, and faculty connections.

Florida State is usually the better financial value unless UW is close enough in cost that the difference will not create meaningful debt, or unless you have a specific plan that takes advantage of what UW does distinctly well. If the extra cost is substantial and you are not entering one of UW’s standout areas with a clear path forward, Florida State is the easier choice to defend.
