Indiana vs Yale for value: which college is the better long-term investment?
I’m trying to compare these two schools from a value perspective, not just prestige. Indiana is much cheaper for me, while Yale is obviously more selective and has a stronger brand.
I’m mainly wondering which one tends to offer better long-term return in terms of career outcomes, alumni network, and overall opportunities after graduation.

For pure long term return, Yale usually creates the larger upside because its alumni network, name recognition, and access to highly competitive jobs are unusually strong. But if Indiana is much cheaper for you, the value question becomes very real, because graduating with far less debt can outweigh prestige depending on your goals.
Yale makes the most financial sense for a student who wants maximum national mobility and expects to pursue careers where institutional brand carries real weight early on. Yale also gives you a residential college system, very small class access in many departments, and a network that tends to remain useful for decades rather than just for the first job.
Indiana can be the smarter investment for a student who is cost conscious, self directed, and confident about taking advantage of opportunities without needing an ultra elite platform. Indiana has especially strong resources in business through Kelley, music through Jacobs, and a large alumni base with solid reach in the Midwest and beyond. For some careers, especially if you are entering business from Kelley or another well supported preprofessional track, Indiana can produce excellent outcomes at a much lower price.
The key question is not prestige alone but price relative to your likely path. If Yale would require only a manageable amount more, its long term payoff is often worth it because the network and signaling power are hard to replicate. If the gap means substantial debt, especially debt that would limit your freedom after graduation, Indiana may offer better value because strong outcomes plus low debt is a powerful combination.
In practice, students aiming for highly selective national pipelines often get more return from Yale. Students who are likely to thrive in a large public university, use internships aggressively, and keep costs low may come out ahead from Indiana on a value basis.
