For economics careers, is UIUC or UCLA the better choice for undergraduate networking and recruiting?

I’m trying to decide between the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and UCLA, and I want to study economics with a goal of going into a career where internships and recruiting matter a lot.

Both schools seem strong overall, but I’m mostly trying to figure out which one gives students better access to networking, internship opportunities, and job placement for econ-related careers.

For economics careers where recruiting and internships matter, UCLA usually gives you the stronger built-in advantage. Its Los Angeles location creates easier access to in-semester internships, a large alumni base in California finance, consulting, media, and tech, and more frequent employer touchpoints without needing to leave campus for a different city. UIUC is still a very solid option, especially if you are self-directed and open to Chicago-focused recruiting, but the day-to-day networking environment is not as naturally plugged into a major job market.

UCLA tends to fit the student who wants proximity to opportunity. Being in Westwood means students can realistically network during the school year, attend employer events with less travel friction, and pursue part-time internships in LA during fall or spring. That matters for economics students because many pre-business paths, including consulting, finance, analytics, and corporate strategy, reward repeated exposure, alumni conversations, and resume-building before junior summer.

UIUC makes more sense for someone who is comfortable creating structure and reaching outward. It has a strong reputation, a large alumni network, and real pipelines into Chicago, especially for business-adjacent roles, analytics, corporate finance, and some consulting. But because Champaign-Urbana is not itself a major recruiting hub, networking often depends more on planned trips, virtual outreach, student organizations, and summer positioning rather than casual proximity to employers.

For a student aiming at California-based careers, UCLA has a clear edge. For a student who likes the Midwest, is cost-conscious, and is prepared to be intentional about clubs, alumni outreach, and recruiting timelines, UIUC can absolutely still lead to strong outcomes.

At UCLA, economics students sit near industries that hire broadly beyond pure econ, including entertainment business, startups, and tech-adjacent roles. At UIUC, the strongest recruiting energy on campus is often tied to engineering, CS, and business-related paths, which can still help econ students, but you may need to work harder to insert yourself into those channels.
