Is Miami or Fordham worth it for a communications major?

I'm trying to decide whether either school is actually worth the cost for communications. I keep seeing both mentioned for media, PR, and internships, but I can't tell how much of that is just reputation versus real opportunities.

I'm mainly trying to understand whether one of them has a stronger overall value for someone who wants to work in communications after college.

The biggest practical tradeoff is location and industry access versus cost and breadth of opportunity. Fordham gives you direct access to New York media, PR, publishing, and corporate communications during the school year, which matters a lot in a field built on internships and networking. Miami offers strong communications options too, especially for advertising, media production, sports, and entertainment-oriented paths, but its value depends more heavily on your price and on whether you want to build your network in South Florida rather than New York.

For communications specifically, Fordham tends to have the clearer professional advantage because being in New York makes part-time internships during semesters much more realistic. That matters more in communications than in some majors, since employers often care about clips, campaign work, internships, and contacts as much as the name on the diploma. Fordham students can tap into media and communications opportunities tied to Manhattan while still being based at Rose Hill or Lincoln Center.

Miami is not just running on reputation. Its School of Communication has real strengths, and the university has visibility in areas like broadcast, journalism, advertising, public relations, and sports media. The campus experience is also more traditional and cohesive than Fordham’s, which some students value a lot. But for pure communications career-building, Miami’s edge is usually more niche and regional unless you are specifically drawn to entertainment, bilingual media, hospitality branding, or sports-related work.

On value, the deciding factor is often price. Communications is a field where taking on very high debt is hard to justify unless the school is giving you unusually strong access or support. If Fordham and Miami cost about the same, Fordham is usually the better bet for overall communications value because New York access is so tangible. If Miami is meaningfully cheaper, that can absolutely outweigh Fordham’s location advantage, especially if you are motivated about internships and willing to hustle for them.

Between the two, Fordham usually offers the stronger overall value for a communications major because the internship pipeline and networking environment are more directly aligned with the field. Miami becomes the smarter choice when the cost difference is substantial or when your interests line up with the areas where Miami’s location and programs are especially useful.
