UC San Diego vs MIT for computer science: which is the better choice for undergrad CS?
I’m trying to narrow down my college list and keep coming back to UC San Diego and MIT for computer science. I know both are strong schools, but I’m looking for a general comparison of the undergrad CS experience.

For undergraduate computer science, MIT offers the more intense, theory-heavy, and broadly prestigious CS experience, while UC San Diego offers excellent CS training in a larger public university setting with especially strong access to research and the Southern California tech ecosystem. MIT’s undergraduate culture is built around problem-solving, hands-on projects, and close integration with math, engineering, and entrepreneurship. It has a huge CS presence, lots of faculty activity, and real depth in research opportunities, but as a public university, access can feel less automatic and sometimes more competitive simply because there are so many students. Internships are still a big strength: UCSD benefits from connections to San Diego biotech, defense, and tech employers, and students also place well in Silicon Valley and Seattle.
For someone focused on pure opportunity ceiling in undergraduate CS, MIT is hard to beat. For someone who wants a superb CS program without quite the same level of academic intensity or smaller private-school culture, UCSD is an outstanding option and often a more balanced day-to-day experience. Cost matters too: if UCSD is dramatically cheaper, that can be a very strong practical reason to lean that way, because both schools can lead to excellent CS outcomes.
