UC San Diego has the edge for undergraduate research opportunities. It has a much larger and more research-intensive ecosystem, including major science and engineering departments, extensive lab infrastructure, and close ties to research institutes and medical research on and around campus.

One concrete difference is scale and breadth. At UC San Diego, undergrads can tap into opportunities across biology, engineering, neuroscience, oceanography, public health, social sciences, and more, with a campus culture built around active research.

Another difference is access versus volume. UC Merced is smaller, which can make faculty feel more approachable and can help motivated students stand out earlier. In some cases, that means undergrads may get hands-on responsibility sooner because there are fewer graduate students competing for attention.

The research environment also feels different. UC San Diego is embedded in one of the strongest research regions in the UC system, so opportunities can extend beyond a single department or even beyond campus through affiliated institutes and nearby collaborators. UC Merced offers a more intimate setting and can be excellent for students who want close faculty contact, but for the broadest set of undergraduate research options, UC San Diego usually provides more depth, more variety, and more built-in pathways into research.
