Is NC State or UVA better for pre-med?

UVA has the edge for pre-med. It offers a more established pre-health advising ecosystem, very direct access to a major academic medical center through UVA Health, and a campus setup that makes clinical volunteering, shadowing, and research especially easy to build into your week.

The biggest difference is clinical access. At UVA, the university hospital and health system are tightly connected to the undergraduate experience, so pre-med students have nearby opportunities in patient-facing settings, physician shadowing, and medical research labs. That matters because med school applicants need sustained exposure to healthcare, not just strong grades.

NC State is still a very solid option, especially if you want a more practical, STEM-heavy environment. Its location in the Research Triangle is a real asset, and students can tap into nearby hospitals, labs, and public health opportunities in the broader Raleigh-Durham area. But those opportunities are often a bit more distributed, whereas UVA’s are more centralized and naturally woven into campus life.

Grade environment is the one area where NC State may appeal more to some students, depending on your major and learning style. A pre-med path is less about the school name than about earning a strong GPA in demanding science classes, and some students find they thrive better in one academic culture than another. Still, if you are choosing based specifically on pre-med infrastructure, UVA is the more polished setup.
