Is UPenn or Cornell better for engineering?

The biggest practical tradeoff is depth versus integration. Cornell is usually seen as the stronger pure engineering school because engineering is a larger, more central part of the university, with broader program offerings and a stronger engineering reputation overall. Penn is also very good, but its engineering school is smaller and is more often praised for combining engineering with business, entrepreneurship, health, and interdisciplinary work.

In most head-to-head comparisons focused specifically on engineering strength, Cornell comes out ahead. That is especially true if you care about the breadth of traditional engineering fields, the scale of the engineering community, and the visibility of engineering on campus. Cornell tends to have more of the classic engineering-school feel, with more students in engineering and a deeper bench across subfields.

Penn’s advantage is that it can be especially appealing for students who want engineering plus something else, especially Wharton-adjacent opportunities, startups, biotech, robotics, or cross-school collaboration. The location in Philadelphia also creates a different experience from Cornell’s more residential Ithaca setting, but that is more about lifestyle than which program is considered stronger.

So if the question is simply which school is more broadly regarded as stronger for engineering, the answer is Cornell. Penn is still an excellent option, but Cornell has the clearer edge in engineering reputation, scale, and field depth.
