Is Cal Poly or UC Irvine better for undergraduate research opportunities?

The biggest tradeoff is research volume versus undergraduate access. UC Irvine has a much larger research enterprise, more graduate programs, more labs, and more funded projects, so there are simply more formal research opportunities across fields. Cal Poly tends to offer closer faculty contact and a more undergraduate-centered environment, but it is not built around research at the same scale as UC Irvine.

If undergraduate research is one of your top priorities, UC Irvine is usually the stronger place for it overall. As an R1 public university, Irvine has extensive lab activity in engineering, biological sciences, social sciences, public health, and other areas, and undergrads can get involved through faculty labs, campus research programs, and summer funding opportunities. Because the university is larger and more research-intensive, you often need to be proactive and persistent when reaching out to professors or applying for positions.

Cal Poly absolutely has research, and in some departments students can get meaningful hands-on projects fairly early because faculty work primarily with undergraduates. That can make mentoring feel more direct once you are in. But Cal Poly is more defined by its learn-by-doing, applied model than by a major research infrastructure, so the total number of labs and funded research pathways is usually smaller than at UC Irvine.

On support after joining a lab, Cal Poly may feel more personal day to day, while UC Irvine may offer more layers of structure such as research centers, grant-funded programs, and broader academic resources.
