Is Cal Poly or the University of Washington better for tech recruiting?

The University of Washington has the edge for tech recruiting. Its location in Seattle puts you next to one of the country’s biggest tech hiring markets, and that proximity matters for internships, part-time roles during the school year, alumni access, and employer presence at campus events. UW is especially well positioned for students targeting software, product-adjacent roles, and large tech employers with major Pacific Northwest offices.

Seattle is the clearest differentiator. At UW, companies can recruit students without asking them to relocate for the semester or travel far for interviews, coffee chats, hackathons, and networking events. That makes it easier to build experience early, including during the academic year, not just in summer.

Program structure is another real difference. Cal Poly’s learn-by-doing model is excellent, and employers do respect it, especially for engineering and applied technical work. Students often graduate with practical project experience that plays very well in interviews. But for pure tech recruiting volume, UW tends to benefit from a broader flow of employers actively hiring nearby, especially in software and computing-heavy roles.

Brand and alumni network matter too, but in somewhat different ways. Cal Poly is very well regarded on the West Coast and can do particularly well with California employers. UW, though, has a deeper built-in connection to a major tech hub, which often translates into more frequent recruiter touchpoints and a larger concentration of alumni in big-name tech companies.

Cal Poly is still a very strong option, particularly if you prefer a more undergraduate-focused environment and want strong hands-on preparation. But if the question is specifically which school tends to open more doors for tech internships and full-time recruiting, UW is the one I’d give the advantage to.
