Which is harder to get into, Ohio State or Vanderbilt?

The biggest practical tradeoff here is that Ohio State admits a much broader range of strong applicants, while Vanderbilt is one of the more selective private universities in the country. In plain terms, Vanderbilt is harder to get into. Ohio State is a large public flagship with substantial in-state enrollment and multiple pathways into the university, while Vanderbilt enrolls a much smaller class and turns away many applicants with top grades and scores.

That difference shows up in how admissions feels at each school. A student who is clearly above Ohio State’s typical academic bar can often view it as realistic or likely, especially if they are an in-state applicant. At Vanderbilt, even very strong applicants are often still in reach-but-unpredictable territory because the pool is packed with students who have near-perfect academics, rigorous coursework, and standout extracurriculars.

Another reason people give mixed answers is that public and private schools operate differently. Ohio State’s admit process is still selective, especially for some programs, honors opportunities, and out-of-state applicants, but the university is built to enroll far more students overall. Vanderbilt’s smaller size makes admission tighter across the board, and there is much less room for applicants who are merely solid rather than exceptional.

So if the question is simply which one is more difficult to gain admission to in general, the answer is Vanderbilt by a wide margin. Ohio State is a respected and competitive school, but it is not in the same selectivity category as Vanderbilt.
