Which college has a more urban campus feel: University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign or Columbia University?

The biggest practical tradeoff is that Columbia is woven directly into New York City, while UIUC sits in a classic Big Ten college-town setting with a defined campus. Day to day, Columbia will feel much more urban because you are surrounded by dense city blocks, apartment buildings, subways, traffic, and businesses just beyond the campus edges. UIUC has plenty around it, especially across Champaign and Urbana, but the immediate environment feels more spacious, student-centered, and recognizably campus-based.

At Columbia, even when you are on campus, the city is always right there. The Morningside Heights area has a real neighborhood feel with mid-rise buildings, busy streets, restaurants, shops, and easy transit access, and Manhattan’s density shapes the experience constantly. Walking around means moving between campus spaces and a major city environment almost seamlessly.

UIUC is urban in the sense that it is large and active, but it does not feel like living in a major city. The campus stretches across Champaign and Urbana with lots of academic buildings, green space, residence halls, and wide paths, and much of daily life revolves around the university itself. There are restaurants, apartments, and commercial areas nearby, but the setting reads more as a college town than a dense urban neighborhood.

So in terms of urban campus feel, Columbia is the clear answer. If what you mean is everyday exposure to city streets, vertical buildings, constant activity, and a campus that blends into the surrounding city, Columbia fits that far more than UIUC.
