University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign vs Johns Hopkins for applied math: which is better?

I’m trying to decide between UIUC and Johns Hopkins for applied math, and I keep seeing both names come up as strong options. I’m interested in the quality of the applied math program itself, including coursework, research opportunities, and how well the school is known in this field.

I want to understand which one is generally the stronger choice for an applied math major.

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale and structure versus intimacy and flexibility. UIUC has a larger, more visible math and engineering ecosystem, with especially strong connections to computation, statistics, CS, and engineering applications. Johns Hopkins offers a smaller environment with easier access to faculty and a very research-driven culture, especially if your interests lean toward scientific computing, data-heavy work, or mathematically intensive science.

On coursework, UIUC is more likely to give you a wider menu and more depth in adjacent technical departments. On research, Hopkins may make it easier to build close faculty relationships, but UIUC’s sheer size creates more total opportunities, especially in computational and engineering-oriented projects.

If the question is simply which is the stronger pick for applied math itself, I would lean UIUC. Hopkins becomes very compelling when you specifically want a smaller undergraduate experience and expect to use applied math in a tightly interdisciplinary way.
