Is UIUC or UT Austin better for computer engineering?

UIUC has a slight edge for computer engineering overall. Its Computer Engineering program in The Grainger College of Engineering is especially well known for the depth of its hardware-software integration, the scale of its ECE department, and the breadth of advanced electives and research options available to undergraduates.

One concrete differentiator is curricular depth inside ECE. At UIUC, computer engineering sits in one of the country’s largest and most established electrical and computer engineering ecosystems, which means a very wide menu of upper-level courses in areas like computer architecture, embedded systems, VLSI, systems, networking, and machine learning. For a student who wants flexibility to move between low-level hardware and more software-heavy work, that range is a real advantage.

Another difference is recruiting and department reputation specifically tied to ECE. UIUC has longstanding visibility with major tech and semiconductor employers, and its alumni network in engineering is especially deep in computer systems, chips, and related technical roles. UT Austin also has excellent recruiting and strong industry ties, especially given its location in Austin, but UIUC tends to come up slightly more often as a destination for students aiming at the most technical corners of computer engineering.

Research access is also a meaningful point in UIUC’s favor. The university has major labs, research centers, and faculty strength across computing hardware and systems, and undergraduates benefit from being in a department where those opportunities are unusually abundant. UT Austin is absolutely a top-tier choice and can be outstanding, especially for students drawn to its campus environment and Texas tech connections, but on pure program strength in computer engineering, UIUC gets the nod.
