The biggest practical tradeoff is scale versus elite-brand signaling: Ohio State has a huge national presence, massive alumni network, and strong recruiting in many fields, while Columbia carries a much stronger across-the-board prestige signal because it is an Ivy League university with a smaller, more selective undergraduate population. In everyday conversations about college status, Columbia is usually viewed as more prestigious overall.

For employer recruiting, the answer is a little more nuanced than raw prestige. Columbia tends to have the stronger national and international brand, especially in finance, consulting, media, certain tech circles, academia, and graduate or professional school pathways. Ohio State is still very well respected, but its reputation is more tied to being a flagship public university with broad strength, big-school resources, and especially strong regional loyalty.

That means plenty of employers actively recruit from Ohio State, particularly in the Midwest and in fields where scale, internship pipelines, and alumni reach matter a lot. For many standard corporate jobs, engineering roles, business functions, government work, and large company recruiting, Ohio State can perform extremely well. But if the question is about status alone, independent of major or region, Columbia has the clearer edge.

Other colleges and graduate programs would also usually read Columbia as the more prestigious name at a glance. Ohio State can absolutely send students to top graduate programs, but it does not carry the same shorthand signal. Columbia is more prestigious in overall reputation and external perception, while Ohio State remains a very respected school with stronger value in scale, school spirit, and broad employer reach than prestige comparisons alone might suggest.
