Is Ohio State or Duke worth it for pre-med?

The biggest practical tradeoff is cost versus built-in access: Ohio State can give you a large university with major medical resources at a lower price, while Duke offers a smaller, more tightly resourced environment with very strong advising and hospital-connected opportunities that can be easier to navigate. Both schools have serious pre-med infrastructure, both place students into medical school every year, and neither one guarantees the outcome because GPA, MCAT, research, clinical work, and sustained service still matter most.

Ohio State’s advantage is scale. You have a major academic medical center, a huge range of labs, volunteering options, student organizations, and course choices. For a self-directed student, that can be excellent for building a strong application. The tradeoff is that at a very large public university, you may need to be more proactive about finding mentors, standing out in big intro classes, and organizing your own path early.

Duke’s advantage is how concentrated the resources are. Duke Hospital, Duke Health, strong undergraduate research access, and a more intimate advising structure can make it easier to find clinical exposure, faculty connections, and pre-med support. Duke also carries more name recognition, which can help a little at the margin for opportunities, though not enough to outweigh a much higher cost.

For pre-med specifically, I would only call Duke “worth it” if the cost is manageable for your family without major debt. Taking on heavy undergraduate debt before medical school is usually a bad setup. If Ohio State is substantially cheaper, that financial flexibility is a real pre-med advantage because it preserves options for med school later.

If the price difference is small, I’d lean Duke because the advising, access, and campus ecosystem are unusually strong for this path. If Ohio State is much more affordable, then Ohio State is the smarter pick, and it is absolutely capable of getting you to medical school.
