For city life, is San Diego State University or Temple University the better college experience?

The biggest practical difference is that Temple is woven directly into a major East Coast city, while San Diego State feels more like a traditional campus inside a large metro area. At Temple, stepping off campus puts you into Philadelphia right away, with trains, buses, neighborhoods, museums, music venues, and food spots all shaping daily student life. SDSU has access to San Diego, but the city experience is more spread out and usually depends more on public transit, driving, or planning where you want to go.

For day-to-day city living, Temple has the stronger urban feel. Philadelphia is dense, walkable in many areas, and built around public transit in a way that makes casual off-campus exploration easier. Students can get to different neighborhoods, restaurants, internships, and events without it feeling like a special trip.

SDSU gives you a different version of city life. The campus itself is lively, and the trolley connection is a real plus, but San Diego is more car-oriented and less concentrated than Philly. A lot of what makes San Diego appealing, like beaches, distinct neighborhoods, and outdoor spots, is there, but it often feels more destination-based than seamlessly part of everyday campus life.

Socially, Temple tends to offer the more immediate “real city” atmosphere, while SDSU blends campus energy with access to a big, attractive region. If what you want is to walk out of class and feel surrounded by city activity, Temple is the clearer answer.
