University of Minnesota vs LSE for finance careers: which is better for recruiting and job placement?
I’m a high school senior trying to decide between the University of Minnesota and LSE for undergrad. I want to work in finance after college, ideally in investment banking or a related field.
I’m mostly trying to understand which school has the stronger path for recruiting and getting into finance jobs after graduation.

LSE is the better option for finance recruiting and placement, especially if your target is investment banking or other front-office finance roles. It has a much denser pipeline into banks, asset managers, and consulting firms, and employers actively recruit there for finance-specific roles. Its location in London also matters a lot, because term-time networking, internships, and employer events are far more embedded in the student experience.
The second differentiator is geography. Being in London puts you close to the City, major banks, buy-side firms, and finance events during the school year, not just in the summer. That proximity makes coffee chats, spring weeks, insight programs, and off-cycle opportunities much more realistic than they would be from Minneapolis.
Minnesota is a solid university with good outcomes in business and strong regional employer ties, especially through Carlson. It can absolutely lead to finance careers, particularly in corporate finance, commercial banking, accounting, and some middle-market paths. But for elite investment banking recruiting, it does not have the same direct feeder-school status or volume of front-office placements that LSE does.
One real caveat is where you want to work after graduation. If your long-term goal is London, Europe, or broadly international finance, LSE has the clearer advantage. If you are certain you want to build a career in the U.S., especially outside New York, Minnesota is more locally legible to U.S. employers, but even then LSE still carries major brand strength with top finance firms.
