Which is better for internship opportunities, University of Florida or George Washington University?

For internship access during the school year, George Washington University usually has the clearer edge. Its location in Washington, DC puts students close to federal agencies, nonprofits, consulting firms, media organizations, hospitals, and policy-focused employers, so part-time internships during the semester are much more built into student life.

GW is especially attractive for students interested in political science, international affairs, public policy, public health, journalism, economics, and pre-law paths. In those areas, the city itself functions like an extension of campus, and networking can happen more naturally through professors, alumni, events, and guest speakers who actively work in those fields. If your idea of career preparation includes interning repeatedly across fall and spring, GW has a very practical advantage.

University of Florida can still be excellent for internships, but the experience is more dependent on your field and your willingness to use summers strategically. UF has a large alumni network, strong employer recognition in Florida, and solid recruiting in areas like business, engineering, health-related fields, agriculture, and some tech pathways. Students do get internships, but Gainesville does not offer the same density of nearby semester-time opportunities that DC does, so many internships happen in summer or require more deliberate searching.

UF makes more sense for a student who wants a traditional campus environment, big-school resources, and strong long-term networking power, especially in Florida and the Southeast. For some majors, that can work very well, but the internships are less likely to feel woven into everyday undergraduate life than they are at GW.

So if internship access is one of your top deciding factors, especially early and during the academic year, GW has the stronger setup. UF is more compelling when you care about internships too, but also want the broader public flagship experience and are comfortable building those opportunities a bit more intentionally.
