Which is better for internships, American University or the University of Miami?

The biggest practical tradeoff is location and the kind of internship ecosystem each school feeds into. American University sits in Washington, DC, where internships are woven into the school-year routine, especially in government, policy, international affairs, nonprofits, communications, and advocacy. The University of Miami also offers strong access, but its opportunities are more tied to Miami’s industries like healthcare, business, hospitality, media, marine science, and some finance, and they are often less centered on the federal-policy world.

If your definition of “better for internships” is easiest access during the academic year, American usually has the edge. DC makes part-time internships during the semester much more realistic, and AU has a long-standing culture of students working in offices across the city while taking classes. That matters because proximity is not just about prestige, it affects how often students can interview, commute, and build relationships before summer recruiting.

Miami can absolutely be strong for internships, especially if your interests line up with South Florida’s economy. The University of Miami has solid connections in business, health-related fields, entertainment, and local corporate settings, and the city itself is active and international. For some students, that can lead to very practical experience and strong regional networking, particularly if they want to stay in Florida or work in industries with a big presence there.

For “overall internship access,” though, I’d lean toward American University. The combination of DC location, semester-time opportunities, and AU’s institutional focus on internships gives it a more built-in advantage across a wide range of students. Miami is appealing when your target fields match the city especially well, but if you want the school that most consistently makes internships easy to pursue during the year and over the summer, American is the safer bet.
