Is Indiana University or UC Berkeley better for economics majors?
I’m trying to compare these two schools for economics and keep getting mixed opinions. I know Berkeley is more selective overall, but Indiana also seems to have a strong business and economics program.
I want to understand which one is generally considered better for an undergrad studying economics, especially in terms of academics and outcomes.

The biggest practical tradeoff is academic prestige and intensity versus flexibility and a more accessible undergraduate experience. For economics specifically, UC Berkeley carries more national and international weight, has a stronger reputation in economics as an academic discipline, and gives you access to a faculty environment that is unusually deep in economic research. Indiana University is still well respected, but its strongest brand is tied more to the broader business ecosystem around Kelley than to economics alone.
If the question is which school is more highly regarded for undergraduate economics, Berkeley is the clearer answer. Its economics department is one of the most established in the country, and that matters for PhD preparation, research exposure, and employer recognition in analytically oriented fields.
Indiana can still be an excellent option, especially if you want a campus where it may be easier to access resources, build relationships, and pair economics with business-oriented opportunities. Kelley’s presence helps a lot with recruiting and professional development, so for a student whose goals lean more toward corporate careers than pure economics, Indiana can be more practical than people assume.
But in a head-to-head comparison for economics itself, Berkeley has the stronger academics and the stronger signal on a resume. Unless cost, fit, or personal circumstances point strongly toward Indiana, Berkeley is the school most people would view as the better place to study economics at the undergraduate level.
