Which is better for finance careers: Indiana University or the University of Rochester?

I’m trying to decide between Indiana University and the University of Rochester, and I want to study finance. I know both schools have strong reputations in different ways, but I’m mainly thinking about which one would give me better opportunities for breaking into finance after college.

I’m looking for the school that would be the stronger choice for finance recruiting, internships, and overall career placement.

Indiana University is the stronger choice for finance careers. Kelley has a much deeper undergraduate finance pipeline, especially for investment banking, corporate finance, and related internships, and it is one of the few large public business schools with a well-known national recruiting presence. For a student focused mainly on finance placement rather than a broader liberal arts experience, IU usually gives you more direct access to the right employers and alumni networks.

One major differentiator is the business school structure. At Indiana, you would be entering an ecosystem built specifically for undergraduates pursuing business, with finance coursework, clubs, case competitions, and recruiting resources centered in Kelley.

Another difference is employer visibility. Kelley is a school that many finance firms already know how to recruit from, and its undergraduate reputation carries real weight in Midwest and increasingly national markets. That matters because finance hiring is often driven by repeat employer relationships, on-campus recruiting habits, and alumni already working in the field.

The alumni network is also a practical advantage. Kelley has a very large base of graduates in banking, consulting, asset management, and corporate finance, which tends to help with informational interviews, referrals, and internship leads.

Cost could still change the decision if Rochester is dramatically cheaper for you, and Rochester may appeal more if you want a smaller, more academically intimate environment. But if the question is specifically which school gives you the better platform for finance recruiting and career placement, Indiana University has the edge.
