Arizona vs MIT for computer science: how should I compare them for undergrad CS?

I’m a high school junior trying to figure out how to compare these two schools for computer science in a realistic way. MIT is obviously the more famous name, but Arizona seems like it could still be a strong option for CS.

I’m mainly trying to understand what factors matter most when comparing undergrad CS programs, like class size, research access, internship opportunities, and how much the school name actually matters after graduation.

The biggest practical tradeoff is elite intensity and instant brand recognition at MIT versus a larger, more flexible, and likely more affordable path at the University of Arizona. For undergraduate CS, MIT gives you unusually deep access to top-tier faculty, a dense concentration of advanced peers, and one of the strongest recruiting networks in tech. Arizona can still offer solid CS training, research opportunities, and good outcomes, but you will usually need to be more proactive about finding the most rigorous opportunities and standing out in a bigger public-university environment.

On class size and academics, MIT is much smaller overall and the CS culture is central to campus life. That usually means tighter academic communities, more classmates who are intensely engaged in computing, and a curriculum that moves fast. Arizona’s CS department is credible and can absolutely prepare students well, but intro courses at a large public university may feel less personal, and advising or access to certain opportunities can depend more on how actively you seek them out.

For research, MIT has a major edge. Undergraduate research is deeply built into the institution, especially through labs connected to AI, systems, robotics, theory, and interdisciplinary tech work. Arizona also has research going on and undergrads can get involved, but the path may be less automatic and the national visibility of the work is not usually at the same level.

For internships and jobs, school name does matter, especially for first internships and highly selective employers. Arizona students still land strong internships and full-time roles, especially if they build projects, do well academically, and use career resources effectively, but the signaling power is not comparable.

A realistic way to compare them is to ask four questions: how much debt each would require, whether you want an intensely academic CS culture, how much support structure you need to access research and recruiting, and whether you are the kind of student who will create opportunities without a school pushing them toward you. If cost is remotely close and you are admitted to both, MIT is the clearer choice for undergraduate CS because it is stronger on academic depth, research access, and employer recognition. Arizona makes more sense when affordability, flexibility, or personal fit changes the equation in a major way.
