Which is better for weather: University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign or University of Oregon?

For most students who care about comfortable day-to-day weather, University of Oregon is the easier place to live. Eugene has a milder climate with wetter winters, fewer temperature extremes, and generally more manageable cold than Urbana-Champaign. UIUC gets much hotter and more humid in late summer, much colder and windier in winter, and it also sees more snow and ice.

Oregon tends to fit someone who would rather deal with lots of gray skies and rain than real seasonal harshness. Eugene is known for long stretches of drizzle, overcast days, and a cool, damp feel from fall through spring, but winter temperatures are usually not severe. If your version of “comfortable” means you can usually get by with a rain jacket instead of bracing for deep freezes, Oregon will probably feel better.

Illinois fits someone who actually likes four distinct seasons and does not mind weather that can be intense in both directions. Urbana-Champaign has sunny stretches and a more classic Midwest seasonal cycle, but that comes with cold snaps, biting wind, snow, icy days, and sticky summer heat. Day to day, that often means more wardrobe changes and more disruption from weather than at Oregon.

The main caveat is sunlight. If persistent cloud cover affects your mood, Eugene’s climate can wear on you even if the temperatures are gentler. In contrast, UIUC’s weather is less comfortable overall for many people, but some students prefer brighter skies and a more traditional seasonal rhythm over months of gray rain.
