Should I choose UVA or Tulane for better city access?

The biggest practical tradeoff is that Tulane is embedded in a major city, while UVA is in a college town with some city-like amenities but not the same urban access. Tulane sits in New Orleans, so restaurants, music venues, neighborhoods, festivals, and off-campus culture are part of daily life rather than something you plan around. UVA is in Charlottesville, which has a lively downtown mall, good food, and plenty to do for a smaller city, but it does not offer the same scale or intensity of urban life.

If city access is a real priority, Tulane has the clearer advantage. You can get off campus and be in a distinctive urban environment quickly, and that matters not just socially but also for internships, service opportunities, arts, hospitality, public health, and culture-related experiences.

UVA does have meaningful access to restaurants, events, and local culture, and Charlottesville is much more than a quiet suburban setting. The area around the Corner and downtown gives students plenty of options, and UVA’s campus life is strong enough that many students do not feel isolated at all. But the off-campus experience is more contained, more student-centered, and less urban in the everyday sense.

For this specific factor, I’d pick Tulane. UVA can absolutely be the right call for other reasons, but if what you want is easy, frequent contact with a real city and the feeling that campus is woven into a broader urban environment, Tulane matches that much more closely.
