Should I go to Ohio State or Notre Dame for pre-med?

If cost is close and you want a smaller, more structured environment that keeps pre-med students closely supported, Notre Dame is the more compelling pick. If Ohio State is meaningfully cheaper, that matters a lot for a future medical school applicant and can easily outweigh the other differences.

The biggest differentiator is advising structure and day-to-day academic environment. Notre Dame is smaller, more undergraduate-focused, and tends to offer a tighter advising culture, which can help with course planning, committee processes, and building strong faculty relationships for recommendations. For pre-med, that kind of close guidance is genuinely useful because staying organized across prerequisites, activities, and timing matters almost as much as the classes themselves.

Ohio State’s advantage is opportunity volume. As a huge public research university with a major academic medical center, it offers extensive hospital exposure, lab options, and a wide range of clinical and service settings nearby. That can be excellent for a motivated student, but you usually have to be more proactive about finding your lane and navigating a much larger system.

Classroom experience also matters. Notre Dame can make it easier to avoid feeling like one of many pre-med students competing for attention, and that often helps with mentorship and recommendation letters. Ohio State has plenty of outstanding faculty and resources too, but at a school that size, some students thrive on independence while others feel they have to self-advocate constantly.

One more practical factor is grade pressure and flexibility. At either school, GPA will matter a lot for med school, so look closely at where you think you will perform best academically, not just where the name sounds strongest. For many students, the better pre-med school is the one where they can earn high grades, get sustained clinical involvement, and keep debt low, and between these two that often points to Notre Dame for support or Ohio State for value.
