Does Michigan State or USC offer better internship opportunities for undergraduates?

The biggest practical tradeoff is location and employer density during the school year: USC gives undergrads much easier access to internships while classes are in session because it sits in Los Angeles, while Michigan State offers a strong college-town experience but many opportunities require more planning, travel, or summer timing. USC students can reach entertainment, media, tech, startups, healthcare, nonprofits, and major business hubs without leaving the city. At Michigan State, the school has a large alumni network and solid career support, but East Lansing does not offer the same volume of nearby in-semester internships.

For overall internship access across majors, USC has the edge. Its location matters a lot because being in LA makes part-time internships during fall and spring far more realistic, and that often leads to stronger resume-building before junior summer. USC also has deep industry ties in areas like film, communications, business, engineering, and entrepreneurship, so employer presence tends to feel more embedded into campus life.

Michigan State is not weak on internships at all. It has strong pipelines in business, supply chain, education, agriculture, government, communications, and some engineering areas, and its alumni base is huge and useful. But compared with USC, the process is often less about stepping into a nearby city economy and more about using career fairs, alumni outreach, and summer breaks strategically.

If you are undecided on major and want the broadest day-to-day access to employers across many fields, USC is the more advantageous choice for internships. Michigan State can absolutely lead to excellent internships, especially if cost or specific programs make it attractive, but on this particular question USC is the school that more consistently makes internship access easier and more immediate.
