Is the University of Miami or the University of San Diego better for internships?

For internship access, University of Miami usually has the edge if you want a larger metro area with more industries nearby and a campus culture that leans heavily into pre-professional networking. Miami gives students access to internships in healthcare, marine science, business, hospitality, media, sports, and nonprofit work during the school year, and its location makes part-time in-semester internships more realistic.

University of San Diego can be excellent too, especially for a student who wants a smaller private-school environment and values close faculty support while pursuing internships. USD students benefit from strong local access to business, biotech, education, nonprofit, and legal or policy-related opportunities in San Diego. The school’s scale can make advising feel more personal, and some students do well there because professors and career staff are easier to know well.

The difference is really in the surrounding market and campus setup. At Miami, there is simply more big-city volume and more varied internship possibilities close to campus, especially if you are self-directed and ready to hustle for opportunities. That matters a lot if you want to intern during the semester rather than only in the summer.

USD makes more sense for a student who prefers a more contained, relationship-driven experience and wants guidance while building experience step by step. San Diego has strong opportunities, but they can be a bit more spread out by industry. For fields like marine-related work, biotech, border policy, education, and community-based nonprofit work, USD can be especially appealing.

If internships are your top priority in the broadest sense, I’d lean University of Miami because of location and industry variety. If you already know you want the San Diego ecosystem and prefer a smaller-campus feel with hands-on support, USD is still a very solid option.
