Which school is better for finance recruiting: University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign or USC?

I’m trying to decide between UIUC and USC, and finance recruiting is a big factor for me. I’m interested in banking or related finance roles, so I want to understand which school tends to give students a stronger path into those jobs.

I know both schools have solid reputations, but I’m having trouble figuring out how they compare specifically for recruiting opportunities and access to finance employers.

For finance recruiting, USC usually gives a more direct path if your goal is investment banking or other relationship-driven finance roles, especially because of its location, smaller undergraduate population, and very active alumni network in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York. UIUC is absolutely capable of getting students into strong finance outcomes too, but it often requires being more intentional about standing out at a much larger school and navigating recruiting through selective student organizations, networking, and high academic performance.

USC tends to fit the student who wants heavy access to alumni and employer touchpoints built into the environment. Marshall is well known for strong undergraduate business placement, and being in Los Angeles helps with internships during the school year, employer events, and informal networking. In finance, that matters because many hiring paths start with connections, coffee chats, and alumni advocacy, not just resume drops.

UIUC makes a lot of sense for a student who is self-directed, cost-conscious, and comfortable competing in a big-campus ecosystem. Gies has a respected brand, and motivated students do place into banking, corporate finance, consulting, and related roles. But the path can feel less automatically packaged. At a large public university, access is there, but you often have to chase it more aggressively through clubs, leadership, technical prep, and outreach.

For broader finance outcomes, including corporate finance and strong business roles beyond Wall Street-style banking, UIUC can still be excellent, especially if the price difference is substantial.
