Which is better for an economics major, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign or UCLA?
I’m trying to narrow down my college list and both UIUC and UCLA are on it for economics. I know they’re both strong schools overall, but I’m mostly trying to figure out which one is the better fit specifically for an econ major.
I care about the strength of the economics program and the opportunities it can lead to during college and after graduation.

UCLA has the edge for an economics major if you are comparing the two on program reputation, access to internships during the school year, and post-college visibility.
One big differentiator is location. UCLA students can reach internships and networking events in Los Angeles much more easily during the academic year, which matters a lot for economics because so many students want experience in business, research, government, or finance before graduating.
Another difference is the academic ecosystem around econ. At UCLA, economics students benefit from being part of a university with strong connections across public policy, business economics, math, statistics, and data-related fields, which can be useful if you want to pair econ with a more quantitative or applied path. UIUC is excellent academically too, especially if you want a large research university with notable strength in quantitative subjects.
A third distinction is the kind of campus pipeline you want. UCLA tends to offer stronger access to employers and alumni in Southern California industries, and that can help if you are interested in careers that mix economics with entertainment, real estate, startups, or public-sector work. UIUC has a very large and loyal alumni network, especially in the Midwest, so it can be especially appealing if you expect to build your career in Chicago or nearby markets.
Cost can still change the answer. If UIUC would be significantly cheaper, it is absolutely strong enough in economics that the lower price could outweigh UCLA’s advantages.
