Which has a better overall reputation: University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign or Ohio State University?

I’m trying to compare these two schools for college applications and keep seeing both names come up a lot. I know they are both big public universities, but I’m not sure which one tends to have the stronger reputation overall with students, alumni, and employers.

I’m looking for a general comparison, not just for one specific major.

UIUC tends to carry the slightly stronger academic reputation, especially nationally among students, alumni, and employers who pay attention to research universities. It is particularly well known for engineering, computer science, and other technical fields, and that academic strength often shapes how people view the university as a whole. Ohio State is also very well respected, but its reputation is often tied more to being a large, prominent flagship with broad name recognition and a huge alumni presence.

For a student who cares most about academic prestige across campuses, faculty, and research, UIUC usually has the edge. It is often seen as a more academically intense place, and its strongest programs have a spillover effect on the school’s overall image. Even outside STEM, people often associate UIUC with strong academics and serious students.

Ohio State stands out for someone who values visibility, school spirit, and an especially large national alumni network. In many parts of the country, OSU may actually feel more recognizable to the general public because of athletics and brand presence. Employers usually know both schools well, but OSU’s scale and alumni base can make it feel especially connected and influential in certain industries and regions.

If the question is pure overall academic reputation, UIUC is usually viewed a notch higher. If the question is broad public recognition and name familiarity, Ohio State can be just as strong or even stronger depending on who you ask. Neither school has a weak reputation, but they are respected in slightly different ways.
