Which is more prestigious for computer science, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign or UCLA?

I’m trying to compare these two schools for computer science and keep hearing different opinions about which one has the stronger reputation. I know both are well regarded, but I’m mostly trying to understand how they are viewed by employers and in the CS field overall.

I’m not asking about admissions or current rankings, just which name tends to carry more weight for computer science.

For computer science specifically, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign tends to carry more weight than UCLA. In CS circles, UIUC has a particularly strong long-term reputation for both systems and theory, and it is one of the names employers and graduate programs regularly recognize as a top-tier technical department. That reputation is narrower than UCLA’s overall brand, but in computer science it is often the more immediately impressive label.

One concrete difference is how each school is perceived inside the field versus outside it. UCLA has broader household-name recognition and a very strong overall university brand, especially with the public and in industries where school name is read more generally. UIUC, though, has the kind of department-specific reputation that lands especially well with software employers, researchers, and people who know CS programs closely.

Another differentiator is recruiting culture and alumni presence in technical roles. UIUC has long been a major pipeline into big tech, quantitative firms, and graduate CS pathways, and its alumni network in engineering-heavy environments is especially visible. UCLA also places very well, but its reputation in CS is more often described as excellent rather than field-defining.

Research identity matters too. UIUC is often grouped with the most respected CS departments in the country when people talk specifically about the discipline, not just the university as a whole. UCLA is absolutely respected and can open many of the same doors, but if the question is which name carries more prestige for computer science alone, UIUC usually gets the edge.
