Which college has a better social life: University of Michigan or Columbia University?

University of Michigan tends to have the stronger built-in social life. Ann Arbor is very centered on the university, Michigan has a classic residential campus with major school spirit, and student social life is concentrated around campus rather than scattered across a huge city. That usually makes it easier to meet people casually, find weekend plans, and feel part of a shared campus culture.

One big difference is how social energy is organized. At Michigan, football Saturdays, tailgates, student organizations, Greek life, residence hall communities, and campus traditions create a very visible social rhythm. Even students who are not into parties often describe the school as lively because so much happens in and around campus, and a lot of students are looking for the same kinds of shared experiences.

At Columbia, social life can be exciting, but it often feels more decentralized. You have New York City right outside the gates, which means endless things to do, but students are also pulled in many directions by internships, off-campus friends, restaurants, neighborhoods, and city events. That can make social life feel less unified, and some students find that it takes more intentional effort to build a consistent friend group or campus routine.

The physical setup matters too. Michigan feels like a college town where student life is the main event, while Columbia sits inside a global city where campus is only one part of daily life. Columbia absolutely offers smart, interesting, active students and plenty going on, but for a more obviously social, communal, and easy-to-plug-into day-to-day experience, Michigan usually comes across as the more fun and connected place.
