Which is better for internship access: University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign or Boston University?

The biggest practical tradeoff is location versus scale: Boston University gives you immediate access to internships during the school year because it sits in Boston, while UIUC gives you a larger campus recruiting machine and very strong employer relationships, especially in engineering, computer science, and technical fields. At BU, students can more realistically intern part time during the semester because companies, hospitals, startups, nonprofits, and finance firms are right around the city. At UIUC, internship access is often strongest through formal recruiting pipelines, career fairs, alumni networks, and summer internships rather than quick transit to nearby employers.

For in-semester internship access, BU has a real advantage. Being in Boston matters if you want to work a few hours a week at a lab, startup, media company, hospital, consulting office, or nonprofit without needing a car or a long commute. That kind of proximity can make it easier to stack experience early, especially in business, communications, public health, policy, and some life sciences.

UIUC is excellent for internship outcomes too, but the process often looks different. Employers actively recruit on campus, and UIUC has a strong reputation with major firms, particularly in engineering, CS, data, accounting, and supply chain. Students often land strong summer internships through career fairs, student organizations, research, and alumni connections, but during the school year the local off-campus internship scene is not as naturally dense as Boston’s.

How much each school helps depends partly on your field. For tech and engineering, UIUC’s employer pull is extremely strong and can rival or exceed BU despite not being in a major city. For finance, media, healthcare-adjacent work, and roles where semester-time professional access matters, BU’s location is a major asset.
