For a student who wants to study math seriously, both can absolutely lead to strong graduate school outcomes. UIUC is especially compelling if you already expect to want a broad menu of upper-level math, connections to computer science or engineering, and a department where mathematics is embedded in a major STEM powerhouse. That environment can be energizing, but it also means you need to be proactive about standing out and building faculty relationships.

Yale’s advantage is not that it has more math resources overall, but that the undergraduate experience is often more personal. Strong students can get deep theoretical training there, and the liberal arts structure makes it easier to combine math with philosophy, physics, economics, or other areas in a coherent way. For graduate school, that close mentorship can matter a lot, especially for recommendation letters and advanced reading or thesis work.

If the question is which is stronger strictly for undergraduate math, I would give Yale a slight edge for pure math students who want close advising and a highly undergraduate-centered academic experience, while UIUC may be stronger for students drawn to applied math or a larger technical university setting.
