Is Indiana University or UCLA better for an economics major?

I’m trying to compare Indiana University and UCLA for economics and I keep seeing different opinions online. I’m mainly looking at how strong the program is for someone who might want to go into business, finance, or grad school later.

I know both schools have good reputations, but I’m not sure how they compare specifically for economics as an undergrad.

For economics specifically, UCLA usually carries more weight nationally, especially if you may want a PhD, policy work, or highly selective finance and consulting paths. Its economics department is very well regarded, the overall academic environment is especially strong across math, statistics, and social sciences, and being in Los Angeles can help with internships during the school year.

Indiana University can be a very smart option for a student whose real goal is business or finance and who wants easier access to a large undergraduate business ecosystem. The big factor there is Kelley. If you are able to connect economics with Kelley courses, clubs, recruiting, or possibly a business-related path, IU can feel more professionally targeted than a standalone econ experience at many universities.

UCLA fits the student who wants economics in a more theoretical, analytical, and research-oriented setting. It is a strong place for someone considering graduate school later, especially if they plan to take more quantitative coursework and build relationships with faculty in economics, math, or statistics. UCLA’s name recognition is also very broad, which can help when employers or grad programs are scanning applications quickly.

Indiana fits the student who wants economics but is really thinking about careers like corporate finance, banking, marketing analytics, or business operations. IU’s advantage is not that its econ department is viewed above UCLA’s. It is that the university offers a strong preprofessional business culture, a huge alumni network, and a campus where business recruiting is a central part of student life.

One important caution: if your top priority is front-office finance or business recruiting, your experience at IU may depend a lot on whether you can meaningfully plug into Kelley-related opportunities. If you would be entering UCLA as an econ major and are comfortable being proactive about internships in LA, UCLA still offers excellent outcomes, but the path can feel less built-in than at a business-heavy campus.
