Indiana vs. Illinois for finance: which is the better college choice?
I’m a high school junior trying to decide between Indiana and Illinois for studying finance. Both schools seem strong, and I’m mostly trying to figure out which one would give me a better overall experience for getting into the finance field.
I care about things like recruiting, internship opportunities, and how the school is viewed for finance.

The biggest practical tradeoff is specialized finance recruiting strength versus a broader, more quantitative business and university environment. Indiana’s Kelley School is especially well known for undergraduate business placement, has a very established pipeline into finance roles, and offers highly structured recruiting support through programs, workshops, and alumni networks. Illinois gives you a large, academically strong Big Ten setting with respected business programs and access to major employers, but for pure undergraduate finance branding, Kelley tends to carry more weight.
For recruiting and internships, Indiana usually has the cleaner advantage. Kelley has a long-standing reputation with employers in corporate finance, investment banking, consulting-adjacent finance roles, and asset management, and its undergraduate business identity is very visible. The school is also known for giving students a more direct business-school experience earlier, which can matter if you want finance-specific clubs, career coaching, and peer culture centered on recruiting.
Illinois is absolutely a credible path into finance, especially if you are self-driven and take advantage of the size of the university and strong employer presence. It can be especially attractive if you think you may want a more analytical angle or may pair finance with something else in a large research university setting. But the finance path there can feel a bit less singularly defined than it does at Kelley, where the undergraduate business ecosystem is one of the main draws.
If your question is specifically which school is better viewed for undergraduate finance and gives you the stronger built-in runway for recruiting, Indiana has the edge. Illinois is still a solid option, but for a student already focused on finance, Indiana is more likely to give the clearer advantage in reputation, alumni access, and organized recruiting momentum.
